Sarah here with a little story…

After I did my YTT in 2005, I was eager to start my new career path. A few weeks later, as I was crossing a street, I looked left for oncoming traffic, and felt a searing pain up the left side of my neck. I quickly turned my head back, and the pain went away. I tried again. Left head turn – searing pain. Head to center – no pain.

Turns out, one of the vertebrae in my neck had rotated and it hit a nerve every time I looked left. Most likely because of the daily 10-minute shoulderstands and 5-minute headstands for 30 days straight during my TT.

The chiro got me out of pain, which was good enough for me at the time. And I kept up my yoga practice, including shoulderstands. I never re-injured it, but to this day, my head sits off-center.

I’m not trying to tell you that shoulderstand is evil, or YTTs are to blame, or ‘neutral’ neck is the goal. What I am here to emphasize is that as teachers, we need a toolbox of practical concepts like variability and progressive overload, so that we can adequately prepare the student in front of us not only for a yoga pose, but for resilience in all their movements.
